Analog Clock Practice for Kindergarten

Ages 5–6

Kindergarteners are just discovering that clocks tell us when things happen. At this stage, the goal is simple: learn that the short hand points to the hour and the long hand at 12 means it is exactly on the hour. Hours only — no half or quarter times yet.

Teaching Tips & Strategies

  • Point to a real clock and name the hour hand (short) and minute hand (long).
  • Start with 12:00, 3:00, 6:00, and 9:00 — the four cardinal positions.
  • Use a song or rhyme: "Short hand tells the hour, long hand tells the minutes."
  • Celebrate every correct answer — confidence at this age is more important than speed.

Curriculum Alignment

  • Identify and use tools that measure time (CCSS K.MD.A)
  • Know the purpose of a clock face
  • Read hours on a clock (1:00 – 12:00)
